The knock came late on the caravan door.
"No it’s not dinner," he said with regret,
"The cows have got out and they’ve gone up the lane!
Now come with your boots and we’ll all do the same"
Now come with your boots and we’ll all do the same.
The clouds were low, the moon was hid
One headtorch to share, now quickly set out!
We ran with our sticks til we came to a car
"Have you lost some beef? They haven’t gone far."
Have you lost some beef? They haven’t gone far.
But the clouds were low and the moon was hid,
And all around not a moo to be heard
Not a snort, not a stamp, so out we all spread
It was just like the stories I’d long ago read
It was just like the stories I’d long ago read.
I stood at a gateway while others walked on
And it felt like an age that I stayed there alone
My toes were so cold that I couldn’t stand still -
But what was that noise from up on the hill?
But what was that noise from up on the hill?
A mooing and lowing and stamping and snorting
And out of the mist they came running and walking
A tramping and shouting “Whoa there now! Whoa!”
In the light of my headtorch their eyes seemed to glow
In the light of my headtorch their eyes seemed to glow
With me on one side and him on the other
And another in front to show them the way
The farmer says “That’s it my girls, that’s right”
And they sang as they wandered back home through the night
And they sang as they wandered back home through the night.
Until at last they arrived at their farm
And with some reluctance went into their bed.
“It’s just pasta and sauce after that I’m afraid
But it won’t be long now, the table is laid”
But it won’t be long now, the table is laid.
